A Francofile’s Guide to Holiday Gift Giving

For the holidays this year, I’m fully embracing my love of all things French by giving Parisian-themed gifts. Here are the top 10 presents I will be buying for my fellow francophiles:

1 The French version of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

2 YSL’s Paris perfume – which is celebrating its 30-year anniversary

3 Repetto ballet shoes for lounging around the house

4 Eiffel Tower shaped scissors

5 Pink champagne

6 Graphic shirts featuring French words such as this Bien Fait sweatshirt

7 Julia Child’s Mastering The Art Of French Cooking

8 Marseille soap.

9 A Chanel compact with a mirror in it so that my girlfriends will look chic in public while they apply their lipstick

10 Coffee table books illustrating the artistry of French designers, like Villas 50 en France, full of images of fabulous 1950s modernist villas

Paris Lives in Your Closet: Statement Coats!

Theatrical jackets could be spotted everywhere during Paris Fashion week this season.

The beauty of a dramatic coat is that it does all the work for you.  It is an outfit in and of itself.  All that is left to be done is to pair it with a fabulous pair of shoes, and you’re out the door!

And considering that the busy holiday season is upon us, procuring a statement coat that can take you from party to party with effortlessness and ease is a wise investment this season!

Happy Birthday, Jacqueline Auriol

Born November 5, 1917 in ChallansVendée (d. February 11, 2000), Ms. Auriol was a French aviator who set several world speed records. In 1938, she married Paul Auriol, son of Vincent Auriol (who would later become President of France). During World War II, she worked against the German occupation of France by helping the French Resistance. She earned a military pilot license in 1950, then qualified as one of the first female test pilots. She was among the first women to break the sound barrier and set five world speed records in the 1950s and 1960s. On three occasions she was awarded the Harmon International Trophy by an American president in recognition of her aviation exploits. Well done!

L’Amour Fou

My style editor, Naomi, recommended this movie to me a while back. It’s a gorgeous documentary about the relationship between iconic designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, all centered around the epic 2009 auction of their private collection at the Grand Palais in Paris.

It’s a must-see for anyone who loves fashion, romance and, of course, Paris.
